University of Melbourne English Language Bridging Program

The University of Melbourne English Language Bridging Program (UMELBP) provides a direct English language pathway from Hawthorn-Melbourne to specific courses at the University of Melbourne. This 10-week program recreates authentic academic activities aimed at developing English language and study skills.

Hawthorn-Melbourne is endorsed by the University of Melbourne as the sole external provider of the University of Melbourne English Language Bridging Program.

Check if your faculty accepts the UMELBP as an entry point into your course. The UMELBP is not available for PhD students.

The curriculum covers the development of language skills for:

  • Extracting important information in lectures
  • Participating in seminars and tutorials
  • Writing in narrative, argumentative and analytical styles
  • Reading and analysing a range of authentic materials
  • Critiquing written and spoken texts

Entry into the UMELBP is different for each faculty or school at the University of Melbourne. Refer to the information below for specific information relating on your faculty's entry requirements. The UMELBP is not available to PhD students.

New Generation Undergraduate Degrees

Applicants to the following New Generation Undergraduate Degrees who achieve the required IELTS or TOEFL scores may be eligible to participate in  the UMELBP:

Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences

Applicants to the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences who achieve the following IELTS or TOEFL scores may be eligible for the UMELBP:

Exclusions:

  1. Applicants seeking entry to the following graduate coursework programs are not eligible for the UMELBP:
    • Master of Journalism
    • Master of Publishing and Communications
    • Master of Creative Writing, Editing and Publishing
    • Master of Global Media Communication
    • Postgraduate Diploma of Arts (Editing and Communications)
    • Postgraduate Diploma of Arts (Media and Communication)
  2. PhD and Masters by Research students are not eligible for the UMELBP.

Melbourne School of Design

Applicants for the Melbourne School of Design who achieve the following IELTS or TOEFL scores may be eligible to participate in the UMELBP:

Faculty of Economics and Commerce

Qualified postgraduate and undergraduate applicants to the Faculty of Economics and Commerce may be eligible for the UMELBP.

Applicants who achieve the following IELTS or TOEFL scores and who have met all other academic requirements for entry to their chosen program (including GMAT where applicable) may be eligible to participate in the UMELBP.
